Do Storytelling Coders Actually Exist?
Hi!!! That’s me! I’ll just start by being open with the fact that no one has ever accused me of being “normal”. I started learning code over 20 years ago, when I was 13, bored, and thought that Geocities was a blast. I used their drag and drop builder to reverse engineer and see the code it built, learning to create it on my own.
Even though I did two 9-week high school coding classes in about 2 weeks, then attempted to build my first eCommerce solution (disaster), I have always loved writing. Code was great, but I wanted to write English, not PHP! When I went off to college, I came with a remote developing job (seriously) and ready to tackle a BA in English.
For a while, code became my way of paying for school. First my Bachelor’s, and then my Masters in Scottish Writing in Scotland (Ha! Bet you didn’t guess that plot twist!). But as marketing shifted, and life happened, I realized that I could still tell stories, just in HTML/CSS, PHP, and JQuery.
Oh Yea, I Know Digital Marketing, Too
I’m going to be real. Coding is great. I love being a developer. Just coding all day can get pretty boring. I absolutely love research and learning, and I wanted to feel like my BA and MLitt weren’t wasted, per se, but utilized in some way. So I started teaching myself copywriting for the web, social media marketing, and other digital marketing strategies because I didn’t want to just be a code monkey.
The short version is I’ve been working in marketing since I was 18 and fresh out of high school. I’ve been a developer, a Reputation Manager (yay online reviews!), a ghost-writing blogger, a copywriter, social media manager, and a digital ads strategist. I know the digital marketing world because I’ve been in almost every facet of it.
I know how to build your website to improve your on-page SEO, write the SEO and customer-converting copy, and follow accessibility guidelines to keep your company protected and inclusive. I also understand the best practices for building your website as a landing page for digital ads, because I’ve run those campaigns myself. When I code your website, you know that it’s fast, secure, easy to manage on your own, and built to work with your social media and digital marketing campaigns.
The Personal Side
I’m not a huge fan of talking about myself, honestly. I love espousing how awesome I am at my job, but personally…it’s rough. But I also know that if we’re going to work together, I think we should get to know each other.
I currently reside in Wichita, KS with my sidekick husky-mix Mac. He’s a spoiled rotten baby and I’m well aware of that. Mac is also a huge fan of me working from home and likes to go outside about 20 million times a day.
I am a giant nerd, and I don’t say that lightly. I grew up borrowing and sneaking comic books from friends (my mom still maintains that they’re a waste of money), with Spider-Man and X-Men being childhood favorites. You probably guessed, but I’m a huge fan of the MCU, and Captain America has long won the spot of my favorite hero (thus my years-old nickname, Captain Coder). While MCU is vastly superior to the DCCU, I cannot pick a favorite between Star Trek and Star Wars. I do also enjoy good “adult” books and it will come as no surprise that I have a soft spot for great Scottish fiction.
